Tx 3 Bass Tournament on Lake Arlington

Last Saturday evening, I was home with the family having fished the morning and thinking to myself how great it was going to be to be back in church the next morning (we’ve had one cold after another in our house the last month or so) and to spend a leisurely Sunday with my girls. Then the phone rang, and it was one of my buddies reminding me about the Tx 3 Bass Tournament on Lake Arlington in the morning. I had completely forgotten. This would be the first time this tournament series had been hosted on Lake Arlington, and I surely didn’t want to miss it. So there I stood about to face the giants: Mama, doe eyed little girl 1, and doe eyed little girl 2.

The groveling began, and with a stern look, I had the kitchen pass to go fishing. I looked at the weather forecast and thought to myself they have been wrong so much lately they cannot possibly get this right. And, sure enough I was reminded of what Jimmy Houston used to say: when the weather man says winds 15 to 20 mph add those numbers together to get what it is really going to be. Watching the trees sway in the early morning hours after I had the boat hooked up and watching the waves in my coffee cup white capping, I knew I deserved what the good Lord was dishing out to me. But, hey…this was about representing my community. (Shhhh, that was one of my arguments to Mama to get to go fishing. I know, I know.)

Arriving at the boat ramp, I got in line, signed the form, paid my entry fee, launched the boat, and joined several other anglers for some early morning dock talk. The wind didn’t seem too bad from the protection of the trees and the cove, but we knew that it wasn’t going to get better. More boats began to arrive, and arrive, and arrive. It was awesome! 52 anglers in all, 31 boats, all launched and idled out into the no wake zone waiting for the signal to take off.

It’s probably not a good sign when during a shotgun start everyone heads to the left, and you’re the only boat heading to the right. I started off on the best spot on the lake all by myself. I fished my game plan hard and didn’t get blown off of any of my spots until about noon when the wind really picked up and my last spot was too tough to fish. I wasn’t alone. Out of the 31 boats only 13 weighed in fish. I knew there would be some big bass weighed in, so I was swinging for the fences. The big bass of the tournament weighed 8.25 lbs!

It was a great tournament, and the best part was when my family arrived at the weigh in and brought fried chicken. We had a picnic, the girls got to see some really big bass, we were joined by friends, and my toddler made a new friend. Getting the kids involved is critical to their understanding, appreciation, and future stewardship of the environment. The tournament had 100% of the fish released alive and well back into the lake.

Until next time, be safe, be Naturally Fun, and I’ll see you on the water!
