What to bring!
Going fishing often involves little more than a fishing pole, some tackle and bait, and a lunch box. But, to get the most out of the experience stick with the old Boy Scout motto of “Be Prepared!” This is especially true when fishing with kids, and the purpose of this post is to get you thinking about what to take with you when you head out with the family to the creek, pond, or lake. And, this list is also applicable for when you and your family come fishing with me at one of our Naturally Fun Neighborhood fishing events.
First, the essentials. These are items that are personal to you and are what are important for the fishing events. You are certainly welcome to fish for anything that you like, but small perch are one of the easiest and most readily available fish at our venues and so the type of tackle to consider bringing with you should be with that in mind.
- Fishing pole
- Barbless hooks (or hooks with the barbs mashed down)
- Small split shot weights (lead free preferable)
- Bobbers
- Bait (Whole kernel corn, nightcrawlers, etc.)
- Hat
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- PFDs (Life jackets)
- Nail clippers (for cutting line)
- Small pair of needle nose pliers
- Small first aid kit for scrapes, etc.
- Fishing license for those 17 and older. All persons under 17 years of age, whether Texas residents or non-residents, are exempt from license requirements. If you are fishing in a park managed by a city, county, river authority, the corps of Engineers, or any other entity, you need a fishing license. Please see the Outdoor Annual for additional information on age requirements and other exemptions.
Other items to consider include:
- Snacks
- Water
- Small folding chair
- Camera
- Nature books for identifying plants and animals
- Small toys
- Wet wipes
- Picnic blanket
Drop me a line with your questions, and I look forward to see you all on the water!
